Clear Adobe Illustrator Cache on Mac

There is no single cache folder for Adobe Illustrator; what grows is its app data, presets, settings and recovery files, plus Adobe's shared components, which together typically occupy 1 GB – 20 GB. Clearing helps when the app misbehaves or you need space back, but you must keep the folders marked as settings, app data or shared with other Adobe apps.

Adobe Illustrator cache folders you can clear

Adobe Illustrator has no separate cache folder. Its folders hold settings and your own data, so there is nothing to clear safely by hand.

What the Adobe Illustrator cache holds and when clearing it helps

Specific to Adobe Illustrator

The app keeps presets, settings and crash recovery data in versioned folders, so each old release leaves its own settings behind. Those leftovers are the usual reason the data footprint keeps growing after updates. Clearing helps when the app starts slowly, behaves oddly after an update, or when old version folders take space you want back. It does not help with cloud documents, which live in Creative Cloud storage, and it must not touch the shared Adobe folders that other installed Adobe apps rely on.

What happens after you clear the Adobe Illustrator cache

Old version folders you remove are gone, so any presets or recovery files inside them cannot be restored once the Trash is emptied. The current version's settings stay in place if you leave its folder alone, and the shared Adobe components, licensing and sign-in data remain untouched. You stay signed in with your Adobe ID, because signing out is a separate action that frees the activation for another computer. Expect the app to look the same on the next launch, minus whatever old-release settings you chose to remove.

Frequently asked questions

Yes.
Will removing old version folders sign me out of Creative Cloud?
No. Sign-in and licensing data live in Adobe's shared OOBE folder, which you keep while any Adobe app is installed.
Does clearing these folders remove my documents?
No. Documents are saved wherever you choose or as cloud documents, so they are unaffected by removing app data folders.
