What Telegram leaves behind

Specific to Telegram

Dragging the app to the Trash preserves data folders in the hidden ~/Library directory. These contain your account database, sandbox settings, and media cache, which typically occupy 500 MB – 20 GB. Because these files reside outside the application bundle, they remain on your Mac until you manually remove them via Finder > Go > Go to Folder.

Account and sync
Chats live in the Telegram cloud and come back after signing in again; secret chats exist only on the devices where they were started.

Preparing to uninstall Telegram

Since secret chats only exist on the device where they started, they will be lost if their local folder is deleted. Most other chats sync with the cloud and reappear upon signing in elsewhere. If you only need more disk space, you can reduce the footprint using the internal storage tools instead of a full removal.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Telegram data: back them up before removing them. Items marked “Yes, once the app is gone” only matter while Telegram is installed, so remove them after the app.
Will my chats disappear if I delete the app?
Cloud chats return after signing in again, but secret chats are permanently lost.
Why is the remaining data folder so large?
Videos from busy channels often cause the cache to grow without limit.
