Clear Airmail Cache on Mac

Quit the app first, then look in its settings for a cache option before touching any folders. Avoid deleting the whole container, because it also holds your account settings. Your mail is rebuilt from your mail server, so the first start afterwards will be slower.

Airmail cache folders you can clear

Airmail has no separate cache folder. Its folders hold settings and your own data, so there is nothing to clear safely by hand.

What the Airmail cache holds

Specific to Airmail

The sandboxed container at ~/Library/Containers/it.bloop.airmail2 holds a local copy of your mail, downloaded attachments and account settings. Clearing the cache helps when mailboxes open slowly or the container has grown to several gigabytes, within a typical data range of 500 MB – 10 GB. IMAP and Exchange mail stays on your mail server, so the local copy can be rebuilt. ~/Library is hidden, so open it through Finder > Go > Go to Folder if you need to see the container.

What happens after you clear the Airmail cache

The app rebuilds the cache from your mail server the next time it runs, so the first open of each mailbox takes longer than usual. Clearing the cache does not cancel your Airmail Pro subscription, which is managed through the App Store. Whether you must sign in again depends on what you removed: if you cleared only the cache inside the app, your accounts should stay connected, but if the whole container was removed, the account settings go with it and you will need to add them again.

Frequently asked questions

Yes.
Will clearing the cache cancel my Airmail Pro subscription?
No. Airmail Pro is a subscription through the App Store, and removing cache files does not cancel it.
Why is the app slow the first time I open a mailbox?
The cache is rebuilt from your mail server, so the first load fetches mail again before it returns to normal speed.
