Clear Bitwarden Cache on Mac

If the app shows out-of-date items, sync errors, or sluggish startup, clearing its cache is usually a safe fix. The cache folders are rebuilt automatically, and your vault remains in your account or on your self-hosted server.

Bitwarden cache folders you can clear

These folders are rebuilt automatically, so removing them does not touch your own files.

Locations are the standard macOS folders Bitwarden uses; some appear only after you use the matching feature.

What the Bitwarden cache holds

Specific to Bitwarden

The cache is spread across several folders. Most of it is the web cache, compiled JavaScript and GPU shader data, which the app rebuilds on its own. The encrypted vault cache and settings sit in the main Bitwarden support folder, so leave that folder's contents alone unless you only intend to clear the rebuildable caches. Clearing tends to help when items look out of date, sync errors appear, or the app is slow to open, since these symptoms can point to a cache that needs rebuilding. A typical install takes up 100 MB – 500 MB.

What happens after you clear the Bitwarden cache

The app rebuilds the removed folders the next time it opens, so the first launch may take a little longer. Your vault is not deleted: the desktop app restores its encrypted local copy by syncing with your account or server. Preferences are also rebuilt automatically. If the app asks you to sign in, enter your usual details, then check a few items to confirm they are current.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower.
Can I undo the cache clearing if I change my mind?
Yes, as long as the folders are still in the Trash, you can put them back until the Trash is emptied. Otherwise the app simply rebuilds them.
Why is the first launch slower after clearing?
The app has to rebuild its web, code and GPU caches from scratch, which takes a little time. After that, it should open at its normal speed.
