Clear Microsoft Outlook Cache on Mac

Clearing the Microsoft Outlook cache is usually safe, and it can free space or fix slow starts and search problems because the app rebuilds the data from your accounts. Try any reset option inside the app first, and remove cache files by hand only if that does not help.

Microsoft Outlook cache folders you can clear

Microsoft Outlook has no separate cache folder. Its folders hold settings and your own data, so there is nothing to clear safely by hand.

What the Microsoft Outlook cache holds and when clearing helps

Specific to Microsoft Outlook

The cache sits in the app's sandboxed data folder at ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Outlook, alongside its preferences. The profile folder inside the shared Office group container holds the local copy of your mail, calendar and contacts, and legacy Outlook keeps that full copy, so it can reach 1 GB – 50 GB. Clearing the cache helps when search stops finding mail, when the app is slow to start, or when the profile folder is very large. Remove only cache files in the app's container, never the profile folder, because it holds your own data.

What happens after you clear the Microsoft Outlook cache

The app rebuilds its cache the next time it opens, so the first start will be slower while it downloads mail again. Exchange, Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com accounts re-download from the server, but POP accounts and anything under On My Computer exist only in the local profile and are not restored from the cache. Your sign-in data is kept in shared Microsoft folders, so you may not need to sign in again, although the app may ask. Activation is tied to your Microsoft account and stays in place.

Frequently asked questions

Yes.
Can I undo it if the cache removal goes wrong?
Yes, if you move the cache files to the Trash instead of emptying it straight away. Items in the Trash can be restored until the Trash is emptied.
Will my server mail disappear while the cache rebuilds?
No. Exchange, Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com mail stays on the server and downloads again after the reset.
