How to Completely Uninstall Avast on Mac

To remove Avast completely, use the built-in uninstall option rather than dragging the icon to the Trash. This ensures all security components and system extensions are fully deactivated.

Avast has its own uninstaller

  1. Quit the app completely (⌘+Q in the menu bar).
  2. Avast includes an uninstall option in its app menu that removes its system components.
  3. Remove the folders Avast left behind, listed in the table below.
  4. Empty the Trash to free up the space.

Why dragging Avast to the Trash is insufficient

Specific to Avast

Simply moving the application to the Trash leaves background services and shields running on your Mac. System-wide folders containing virus definitions, engine files, and quarantine also remain, occupying 200 MB – 2 GB of space. These directories and the user library persist until removed separately.

Background items
Shields run through background services and system extensions that remain if only the app is deleted.

Preparing to uninstall Avast

Review the quarantine area to restore any necessary files before starting. Ensure you have your activation code or account details since paid features are tied to them. Separate steps are required to remove browser extensions if you installed them.
