What Blender leaves behind

Specific to Blender

Dragging the app to the Trash retains preference folders, add-on data, and cached asset indices. It also leaves behind a Finder thumbnail extension located in both Application Scripts and Containers. Because the app creates a separate settings folder for every version ever run, older versions continue to occupy space.

Background items
Blender includes a Finder Quick Look thumbnail extension for .blend files.

Preparing to uninstall Blender

Before removal, identify which version folders to keep since they contain your startup files and extensions. User data typically ranges from 1 GB – 50 GB. Ensure all .blend projects and their external textures are grouped together for backup. You should manually delete outdated version folders you no longer need.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Blender data: back them up before removing them. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower. Items marked “Yes, once the app is gone” only matter while Blender is installed, so remove them after the app.
