How to Completely Uninstall Box on Mac

Dragging Box to the Trash leaves its cache, preferences, and File Provider extension intact. To remove the app completely, you must run its official uninstall script located in the vendor's support directory.

Box has its own uninstaller

  1. Quit the app completely (⌘+Q in the menu bar).
  2. Box Drive ships an uninstall script in /Library/Application Support/Box, which is the vendor-recommended way to remove it and its extension.
  3. Remove the folders Box left behind, listed in the table below.
  4. Empty the Trash to free up the space.

3 locations. Tick each one as you remove it; back up anything marked as your data first.

Locations are the standard macOS folders Box uses; some appear only after you use the matching feature.

Specific to Box

Deleting the application bundle does not remove its local cache, settings, or background services. The File Provider extension remains active, continuing to manage cloud files in Finder. Local data, typically 500 MB – 10 GB, stays in the support folder. Your personal documents in CloudStorage are preserved until you delete them separately.

Background items
Box Drive adds a File Provider extension that macOS manages.
Account and sync
Files are stored in your Box account; Box Drive streams them and keeps only opened or offline files locally.

Preparing for Box removal

Before uninstalling, ensure all pending uploads finish so new files sync to your account. Copy any files marked for offline use to a local location if you need them. Sign out of the service to sever the connection. Then run the uninstall script from the support directory to remove the app and its extension cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Box data: back them up before removing them. Folders marked “Yes, settings reset” hold settings, which return to their defaults. Items marked “Yes, once the app is gone” only matter while Box is installed, so remove them after the app.
Do I need to delete the CloudStorage folder?
No, that folder contains your own documents and is not part of the app installation.
Will my files be deleted from the cloud?
No, removing the local app does not affect files stored in your Box account.
