Manual cleanup steps

  1. Quit the app completely (⌘+Q in the menu bar).
  2. Move Kodi from the Applications folder to the Trash.
  3. Remove the folders Kodi left behind, listed in the table below.
  4. Empty the Trash to free up the space.

Everything Kodi keeps on your Mac

Locations are the standard macOS folders Kodi uses; some appear only after you use the matching feature.

What Kodi leaves behind

Specific to Kodi

Dragging the app to the Trash preserves your databases, add-ons, and thumbnails in the Library folder. These remain because they contain your personal setup rather than application code. While logs and certain archives regenerate automatically, your custom library remains until you manually navigate to the hidden ~/Library directory via Finder.

Preparing to remove Kodi

Before deletion, decide if you want to preserve your customized environment. Since the app stores everything in one location, removing that folder erases all favorites and watched statuses. Your actual media files stay where they are since the app only stores pointers and artwork.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Kodi data: back them up before removing them. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower.
Will my movies and music be deleted?
No, your media files stay where they are; only library data and artwork are stored by the app.
Why is the remaining data folder so large?
The Thumbnails folder often grows to gigabytes after browsing large libraries or many add-ons.
