What Opera leaves behind

Specific to Opera

Moving the app to the Trash preserves your profile, including bookmarks and passwords, along with various caches and settings. These remain because they are stored in separate Library folders. Notably, the profile folder uses the bundle ID com.operasoftware.Opera rather than the product name, making it easy to overlook. You must manually navigate to the hidden ~/Library via Finder to find and remove these remnants.

Account and sync
An Opera account syncs bookmarks, Speed Dial, passwords and history; without it everything exists only in the local profile.

Preparing to uninstall Opera

Since some data exists only in the local profile without an account sync, you should secure your information while the browser is still active. Ensure all necessary credentials and site configurations are exported or synchronized. Once your data is safe, fully shut down the software to prevent errors during removal. Items in the Trash can be restored until you empty it.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Opera data: back them up before removing them. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower. Folders marked “Yes, settings reset” hold settings, which return to their defaults.
Why is the profile folder named differently?
The app names this directory after its bundle ID instead of the product name.
Where is the main data folder located?
It is found at ~/Library/Application Support/com.operasoftware.Opera.
