What Spotify leaves behind

Specific to Spotify

Dragging the app to the Trash preserves user settings, login info, and offline downloads. It also leaves behind a streaming and image cache and preference files. These remain on your Mac because the system treats them as user data rather than part of the application binary.

Account and sync
Playlists and your library live in your Spotify account; offline downloads stay on this Mac only and must be downloaded again on a new install.

Preparing to remove Spotify

Since offline downloads stay on this Mac only, note which playlists you have saved if you plan to repeat the process later. You can use the internal storage settings to empty the streaming cache or remove all downloads before quitting. Deleting the app itself will not trigger these cleanup actions.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Spotify data: back them up before removing them. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower. Folders marked “Yes, settings reset” hold settings, which return to their defaults.
Will my playlists disappear after I uninstall?
No, your library and playlists live in your account and are not stored locally.
Where are the remaining files located?
Most reside in ~/Library/Application Support/Spotify, accessible via Finder > Go > Go to Folder.
