Clear Docker Desktop Cache on Mac

Clear the Docker Desktop cache from inside the app with Troubleshoot > Clean / Purge data, but first make sure you no longer need the images and volumes it erases. The app stays installed, and its settings, sign-in state and command-line links are left alone.

Clear the Docker Desktop cache without guessing

Docker Desktop data usually takes 5 GB – 100 GB on a Mac. The free scan shows the exact size on your Mac before you change anything.

Clear it from inside Docker Desktop first

The safest way is the option built into the app: Troubleshoot > Clean / Purge data deletes all images, containers, volumes and build cache; it does not remove the app, its helpers, the CLI links or ~/.docker.

Docker Desktop cache folders you can clear

Docker Desktop has no separate cache folder. Its folders hold settings and your own data, so there is nothing to clear safely by hand.

What the Docker Desktop cache holds

Specific to Docker Desktop

Docker Desktop keeps its images, containers, build cache and volumes in one large virtual disk file, which typically takes 5 GB – 100 GB. Clearing helps when that disk image keeps growing even after you delete containers, or when docker system df reports a large reclaimable build cache. Volumes live in the same file, so they are erased too, and they may hold your own project or database data.

What happens after you clear Docker Desktop data

The purge removes all images, containers, volumes and build cache, so anything stored only in a volume is gone. Docker Desktop keeps working, but the first start afterwards can be slower because images must be downloaded again when you run them. Your settings, sign-in state and CLI configuration stay as they were, so you should not need to sign in again.

Frequently asked questions

Yes.
Does clearing the cache log me out of Docker Desktop?
No. The sign-in state and settings are kept, so you should not normally need to sign in again after a purge.
Does dragging the app to the Trash clear the cache?
No. Dragging it to the Trash leaves its helpers, command-line links and data folders behind, so the cache is not cleared that way.
