Clear Krita Cache on Mac

Clearing the Krita folder means losing every custom brush, resource bundle and workspace you have set up, because the app keeps them together in one place. Only do it if you accept that reset, and check for a reset option inside the app first.

Krita cache folders you can clear

Krita has no separate cache folder. Its folders hold settings and your own data, so there is nothing to clear safely by hand.

What the Krita folder holds and when clearing helps

Specific to Krita

The folder at ~/Library/Application Support/krita holds brushes, resource bundles, workspaces and session data. It is your own data, not disposable cache, and its size usually falls between 500 MB – 10 GB, which is why it looks like the obvious place to free space. Clearing it mainly helps when the app misbehaves and you have no other fix. Because all custom resources sit in this one folder, you reset all of them at once, not just a single broken brush.

What changes after you clear the Krita folder

After clearing, the app starts with its default brushes, bundles and workspaces, and any custom ones you made are gone unless you saved a copy elsewhere. Your saved documents stay where you chose to save them, because they are not in this folder. Deleting the app itself does not remove this folder or your documents, so reinstalling is not needed to free that space. Move the folder to the Trash rather than emptying it straight away, since Trash items can be restored until it is emptied.

Frequently asked questions

Yes.
Can I clear only my custom brushes instead of the whole folder?
Nothing here says the folder can be cleared in parts, so assume that clearing it resets everything in it together. Copy anything you want to keep before you start.
Do I need to reinstall the app to get the space back?
No. Removing the folder is what frees that space, and deleting the app on its own does not remove it.
