Clear Unity Cache on Mac

Clearing the Unity cache empties its global package cache, which the app rebuilds automatically. It helps when that cache has grown large, and it leaves installed editor versions and your projects alone.

Unity cache folders you can clear

These folders are rebuilt automatically, so removing them does not touch your own files.

Locations are the standard macOS folders Unity uses; some appear only after you use the matching feature.

What the Unity cache holds and when clearing it helps

Specific to Unity

The cache is the global package cache, which the app rebuilds automatically the next time it needs packages. Downloaded Asset Store packages and editor settings sit in neighbouring folders and hold data you may need, so leave them alone. Clearing the cache is worth trying when that folder has grown large, since the app's data typically takes 2 GB – 100 GB in total. Editor versions installed through Unity Hub are managed separately, so clearing the cache does not remove them. Each project's Library folder regenerates on its own, which is a separate matter from the cache.

What happens after you clear the Unity cache

The next time the app needs a package, it downloads and stores the files again. The first start afterwards can be slower while the cache and project Library folders rebuild. Your licence is managed through your Unity ID in the Hub, and the cache is not where that licence is kept. Your projects, your own files and installed editor versions stay where they are.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower.
Will my projects take longer to open?
Yes, the first open can be slower because each project's Library folder regenerates.
Do I need to sign in again afterwards?
Check that your licence is still listed in the Hub after clearing, since it is managed through your ID there.
