What Claude leaves behind

Specific to Claude

Dragging the app to the Trash preserves helper files, cached data, and personal configurations. Local data typically occupies 200 MB – 2 GB, though the Cowork VM image in the vm_bundles folder can exceed 10 GB. These remain in your hidden Library directory until manually removed. Removing the application binary does not affect these stored directories.

License
The app is free; paid plans are a subscription tied to your Anthropic account.
Account and sync
Chats and projects are stored in your Anthropic account and reappear after signing in again.

Preparing to uninstall Claude

Before deletion, identify which desktop extensions were installed since they reside only on your Mac. Your MCP server configuration is also local and will be lost if the Application Support folder is deleted. Since subscriptions are tied to your account rather than the software, manage billing separately. Ensure the program is fully closed before modifying any files.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Claude data: back them up before removing them. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower. Folders marked “Yes, settings reset” hold settings, which return to their defaults. Items marked “Yes, once the app is gone” only matter while Claude is installed, so remove them after the app.
Will my chat history be deleted?
No, chats and projects are stored in your Anthropic account and reappear when you sign in again.
How do I find the hidden library folders?
Use Finder > Go > Go to Folder and enter the specific path provided in the table.
