How to Completely Uninstall Insomnia on Mac

To uninstall Insomnia completely, you must remove both the application and its associated data folders. Dragging the app to the Trash alone does not delete your personal documents or configuration files.

What Insomnia leaves behind

Specific to Insomnia

Moving the app to the Trash preserves your local vault data, request history, and plugins. These files, along with macOS-level preferences and various caches, occupy between 100 MB – 2 GB of space. Because the app stores local-only projects as database files in its support folder, these remain on your disk until manually deleted via the hidden ~/Library folder.

Account and sync
Projects can be stored locally, in cloud sync or in a Git repository; only local projects depend on this folder.

Preparing to remove Insomnia

Before deletion, identify which projects are stored locally versus those synced to your account or Git. Only local projects depend on the support folder and will be lost if that directory is removed. You should also back up any custom plugins installed in the app folders. Ensure the tool is fully quit before attempting to remove any files.

Frequently asked questions

Not all of them. Folders marked “Back up first: your data” hold your own Insomnia data: back them up before removing them. Folders marked “Yes, rebuilt automatically” are rebuilt automatically; removing them only makes the next start slower. Folders marked “Yes, settings reset” hold settings, which return to their defaults.
Will deleting the app remove my synced projects?
No, because synced projects are stored in the cloud or Git, not exclusively in the local support folder.
How do I access the hidden folders to finish the removal?
Use Finder > Go > Go to Folder to navigate to the required paths.
